The mission of the Language Science Center is to advance an interdisciplinary science of language to address large-scale, complex problems in fundamental science and society.

Interdisciplinary Education

One of the Language Science Center’s major goals is to provide innovative interdisciplinary education preparing students to be leaders in diverse careers. Our programs are widely recognized for their innovation, especially in promoting student agency. At the graduate level they have attracted talented students and federal support.

Research at the LSC

Language science research at UMD addresses broad questions and combines expertise in multiple departments, methodologies, and research areas. The strength of our research lies in the close integration between researchers from diverse backgrounds, and the connection of fundamental science to applications for learning, technology, and clinical challenges.
